The Goodbye We Didn’t Know We Needed ••• Signs from my Pets – Part 3

The days after Crispy died were emotional and… interesting.

I started seeing 3s and 9s everywhere. On number plates. On grocery receipts. On the times of YouTube videos.

It was happening often enough that I started paying attention.

It took us two days to finally pick up the phone and call the crematorium.

When we spoke to them, they gave us two options: one for 289€ and another for 339€.

Our Spanish isn’t great, so we didn’t really understand what each package included.

We chose the more expensive one purely because 339 is Crispy’s number.

Turns out, she had a surprise for us.

And we are SO glad she did.

When we arrived at the cremation place, we were expecting to pick up her ashes. Instead, we were led into a room where Crispy was resting under a blanket.

I had absolutely no idea that wakes for dogs were even a thing.

And honestly? I don’t know if I would have chosen to do it if I’d known beforehand.

Death is so hidden away in our society. We don’t see bodies. We don’t spend time with people who have died. We’re often encouraged to say goodbye quickly and move on.

But Crispy had somehow led us into exactly the experience we needed.

It was so cathartic to see her one more time. To really have time to say goodbye, and thank her again. To stroke her again. To feel her peace. To just be with her.

And something happened during those thirty minutes that I hadn’t expected.

Even though her death had been very peaceful, there had still been trauma around it.

And somehow, spending that time with her body released the trauma from mine.

We left with a feeling of completion.

It was an absolute gift.
