The Cat Who Didn’t Want to Talk About Dying

Don’t go imagining the worst. Don’t mentally prepare for losing me. Don’t spend so much time in a future where I’m gone that you miss what’s happening right now.

I’m here. So be here with me.

And here’s the uncomfortable thing. That’s exactly what Hannah’s mind was doing. Racing ahead. Rehearsing goodbyes that haven’t happened. Grieving someone who’s still curled up next to her on the sofa.

Mika was having none of it 😃

Then there was the thing Hannah had never been able to shake off. Right before one of Mika’s seizures, Mika sent her a wave of love. Just… boom. Pure love. Out of nowhere.

Why did you do that?, we asked.

“I wanted her to know what was going on with me. That I’m okay. And that I love her. And I wanted her to feel that.”

I’ve got tears in my eyes typing that 🥺

Oh — and here’s another goosebumps moment:

I asked Mika this question: So you want your mama to not focus on the physical aspect of your relationship, but on the spiritual aspect?

Right in that moment, Mika meowed. Out loud. She was lying right next to Hannah the whole session, and we both heard it.

That was her confirmation 🥰

And in the end, that was Mika’s answer to everything. Not what’s wrong. Not what to fix.
