How Do You Know When Your Dog Wants to Leave ••• Signs from my Pets – Part 1

This is the first photo I ever took of Crispy. It was meant to be her profile picture for the dog rescue — so a family could find her and take her home. It worked.
Just not the way anyone planned 😏

Crispy came into our lives very unexpectedly, one day before Christmas in 2021.

I was at an animal shelter taking photos of all the dogs and cats for their new website. Bringing a dog home had not been part of the plan that day 🙈

On the drive back, she somehow managed to quietly steal the muesli bar I’d put on the passenger seat for myself and eat it on the back seat.

So obviously I called her Crispy 😄. It wasn’t meant to be her forever name because she was our new foster dog.

Several families were interested in her. All of them fell through. And by September 2022 she had wriggled herself so deeply into our hearts that we decided to officially welcome her into our family.

Of course that had been her plan all along 😏…

Once she trusted us, she was a happy-go-lucky girl who loved life. Even though she was almost blind, she loved running on the beach, rolling in the grass, and finding little friends under rocks and in bushes.

And she had that “Crispy walk” she always did when she was looking for more little friends 😃

She was 10-plus already when we adopted her, and her health wasn’t in great shape. So we always knew our time together would be shorter than we’d have liked — and that she’d be our first goodbye.

But knowing something in your head is very different from experiencing it yourself…

In 2024, her cancer started winning. We knew her time was coming to an end.

Then, on the morning of the September equinox, we were sitting on the sand at a beach — we were living in Spain at the time. Crispy nuzzled her head between my arm and my side. She’d done this before many times. But she’d never stayed longer than a few seconds.

That morning, she rested there.

And I heard what she wanted me to know:

"It is time."

I felt it in my whole body.

It wasn’t easy to hear.

But I firmly believe our animals have a right to make their own decisions.

Who was I to hold her back?

So we made her last vet appointment that morning…

This is Crispy’s very last walk on the beach. I took it right after she told me she wanted to go — that’s why you can hear my sniffles in the background.
She had one final thing she wanted to do, though.
Heads up: it’s a bit disgusting 💩
